Description
Essential Functions: The wildlife program at Bend/Ft. Rock Ranger District proposes to utilize one Generation Green intern during the summer of 2018 to assist with backcountry cave management and bat monitoring efforts. Work will likely include weekend shifts. Most assigned tasks will occur above ground – cave entry will only occur following strict safety protocols. Duties would be spread out over the summer (mid/late June through August) working an average two days a week.
Educational Aspect
The intern will initially: Working with District staff, the intern duties would include: 1) Visit cave sites (driving to and from in a government vehicle), collect data, assess conditions, and document with photos; 2) Deploy and operate acoustic monitoring equipment, manage acoustic data; 3) Document recreational cave use, keeping data organized and accessible; 4) Make contact with public cave users and help with education and outreach efforts about caving etiquette, Leave No Trace ethics, white-nose syndrome and cave management; 5) Participation in Deschutes National Forest New Employee Orientation occurring in June, 2018 (to include Defensive Driving, First Aid and CPR training).
Further Requirements
Minimum Qualifications: 1) Valid driver’s license; 2) Ability to spend long days in the field under varying weather conditions; 3) Ability to hike over rough, uneven terrain; 4) Use a map, compass and GPS device; 5) Good communication and organization skills; 6) Ability to work in small teams, show initiative and use creative problem solving skills; 7) Interest in a wildlife/natural resource management career.
